The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) reports that the UK requires 251,500 construction workers over the next five years to sustain projected growth. According to the CITB's annual Construction Skills Network (CSN) report, UK construction output increased by 2% last year and is expected to grow by an average of 2.4% annually until 2028, with employment in the sector predicted to reach 2.75 million.
Despite welcoming 200,000 new workers in 2023, the construction industry experienced a net loss of 10,000 workers due to retirements and attrition. With a third of employers struggling to find skilled staff, CITB has pledged £267m to boost industry diversity, quality, and productivity, making construction a more appealing career for future generations.
CITB's investment will enhance three initiatives: the New Entrant Support Team (NEST) will assist employers in improving recruitment processes, accessing grants, and finding appropriate training; the Industry Impact Fund will provide direct funding for employers to develop and trial new recruitment solutions; and the Employer Network will allow local employers to set their own funding priorities to address specific regional skills needs.

"The UK construction industry will continue to grow but needs more people in the workforce with the right skills.
"There has always been a demand for workers, and CITB's CSN report drives home how many are leaving the sector compared to those joining and the opportunities for employers to address this challenge by recruiting and developing a skilled, competent, and diverse workforce that can meet current and future needs."
